The Crash Bandicoot series is one of the earliest standouts that PlayStation ever had, with the original trilogy being a big success on the original PlayStation. The series didn’t exactly stay strong once the PlayStation 2 rolled around, and in the many years following that it fell off the radar completely.
However, the first three games were recently reworked into a new PlayStation 4 collection called Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, and the response has been very good so far. Not only has the game received great reviews, but the sales for the game so far have been very impressive. This seems to bode well for the series’ future, and now Activision’s CEO has confirmed that things are looking good.
Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg did an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, where he mentioned the reemergence of Crash and what it means going forward. He said that “We are experimenting with Crash. We know there’s a vocal fanbase that wanted that to come back. But you never know if that is emblematic of a larger audience or just this niche, nostalgia-based community. So far, we are seeing some real passion for it, so that could lead to other things. Of course, we are always trying to find the next big thing. But our first priority is to make sure we are servicing the communities that we are already lucky enough to have.”
It would be fantastic to see the Crash series come back with new installments, as that type of game just isn’t made very much anymore. However, with the success of mascot platforms like Yooka Laylee happening recently, we could be looking at a resurgence of this once thriving genre. A lot of fans are also begging for a remaster of Crash Team Racing, so there’s always the possibility of that being on the horizon considering the success of the N. Sane Trilogy
