There were rumors leading up to this year’s E3 that we might get the announcement of a new Splinter Cell game during Ubisoft’s press conference, but that obviously didn’t happen. This has resulted in many wondering what the hold up is on a new entry in the long-running series, but now Ubisoft has come out to confirm that they’re in the process of getting a new game in motion.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently said that “What we can say is we’re receiving a lot of sketches and proposals around the brand and we’re going to pick one up. I think you will be able to see something, but you will have to wait for that.”
This of course suggests that things are in the very early stages regarding the next Splinter Cell game, but it should at least come as a relief to those who thought the series had been put on the shelf. Guillemot suggests that it will be a while before we actually see anything regarding the new game, so Splinter Cell fans still have a decent wait ahead of them.
The last game in the series to release was called Blacklist, which launched in 2013. The game was notable for being the first in the series not to feature the voice of Michael Ironside as protagonist Sam Fisher, with Eric Johnson taking over voice duties. Ironside was replaced due to the fact that he was unable to perform motion capture for the game. Despite a strong critical reception, the game failed to meet the sales expectations of Ubisoft.
Even though Assassin’s Creed is currently Ubisoft’s juggernaut series, the Splinter Cell series was once the biggest one they had going. It would be great if they could inject some new life into the series with the next installment, bringing the series to the new generation of consoles for the first time and get the ball rolling again.
