Super Mario Odyssey is easily the biggest game that the Switch has left for 2017, and it’s set to be a big change of pace for the series in a lot of ways. One way it will remain the same is that you will collect items called Moons in each level, with the object being to collect a certain amount of them to beat the game.
This is the same idea as Stars and Shines in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, but those games only had a handful of each per level. It has now been confirmed that there will be lots of Moons in each level of Super Mario Odyssey, hinting at the levels being much bigger and more dense than ever before. This was confirmed by a Nintendo rep on the E3 show floor, who claimed that each level will have anywhere from 30-50 moons, possibly even more.
It definitely sounds like the next Mario game is going to be big, and that’s great news for Switch owners. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also took things in a much bigger direction, and that was a move that ended up being a massive success. Mario is definitely a very different kind of game when compared to Zelda, but it looks like it’s taking a similar idea and putting its own spin on it.
One of the biggest differences in Super Mario Odyssey compared to other games in the series is that Mario has the ability to capture other creatures with his hat. This allows him to take control of them and opens up wildly different gameplay options, such as being a dinosaur or just an average city person.
