Now that Nintendo has released the home console/handheld hybrid Switch, many have begun to wonder what that means for the 3DS. The handheld has been a big success for the company, but now that the Switch can be taken on the road (and with better specs) it could end up making the handheld obsolete.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said to IGN that “We’re going to continue to bring new content, and that’s what’s going to keep this device vibrant and keep it going well into 2018 and beyond.”
He goes on to say that the Switch is “a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. But look, in the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right? Their preferred gaming device that they can play fantastic Zelda, Mario, third-party content, all of their favourite franchises brought to life on the platform. That’s what we want. And we’re greedy and we want Nintendo 3DS right alongside it.”
Judging from the lineup of games that Nintendo has planned for the 3DS, it seems like the company is sticking to their word. Games like Hey Pikmin!, Metroid: Samus Returns and Pokemon Ultra Sun & Pokemon Ultra Moon are all set to launch this year, meaning that 3DS owners still have a lot to look forward to.
Those looking to get a shiny new version of the handheld also have the 2DS XL on the horizon, which is set to launch on July 28th. That version of the handheld comes with all of the power that the regular 3DS XL has, minus the 3D feature. It also comes with a cheaper price tag, costing just $149.99. Seeing as the 3D feature is something that most shut off anyway, the 2DS XL could be a great starting point for newcomers.
