It’s well known at this point that the next God of War game is going to be a big departure when compared to the games of the series’ past. Instead of a linear hack and slash game, the newest entry will be taking an open-world approach that has much more of a focus on exploration.
In fact, it has now been revealed that the new game has taken some influence from games like The Legend of Zelda, such as how you want to search every nook and cranny in a Zelda game to find all of its secrets. Game director Cory Barlog spoke with GamesRadar+ about the game, and he revealed that the game’s exploration is in the spirit of classic Zelda games. He specifically noted the joy of spotting a crack in a wall, and then blowing it up to reveal a new area that was hiding in plain sight.
So the new God of War is going to feature this kind of exploration philosophy, which should definitely be an interesting change of pace. It isn’t going to be a completely open-world game, but there will be plenty of secrets for players to sniff out if they so desire. This aspect won’t be absolutely vital to the game for those who aren’t into exploration games, but the hidden areas will reward those who take the time to find them.
Barlog went into more detail about the game elsewhere in his chat with GamesRadar+, revealing that combat isn’t as big of a departure from the previous games as one would think. Kratos is still capable of dishing out gory justice, but the style has just been shifted slightly to make it something fresh. Also, QTEs have been completely removed from the game, which will likely come as a relief to those who were getting sick of them.
God of War is set to launch exclusively for PlayStation 4 in 2018. The game received a new Be A Warrior trailer during E3 2017, which you should definitely check out if you haven’t already.
