With the announcement of the new Assassin’s Creed game from E3 this week, not many are surprised. It’s not news to expect Ubisoft to announce a new game in this series every year or so. But they have started raising a few eyebrows with the value of the Assassin’s Creed Origins Collectors Edition, and it’s a whopping 800 dollars US.
First a breakdown of all the different versions of this new game, and some minor details on the title itself. Origins is slated to release on October 27th of this year, with pre-orders already available. You can check the Steam store page right now, as it’s already gone up, like with many other games announced this week. The regular edition of the game is $69.99. No real surprises there. The “Deluxe Edition” is $79.99, and comes included with an additional gear pack and a pre-order exclusive mission called “Secrets of the First Pyramids”. The second most expensive tier available, called “Gold Edition” is worth $119.99 and comes with everything in the Deluxe Edition. It’s main selling point is the inclusion of the season pass of the game itself.
Now the 800 dollar behemoth we’ve all been waiting for. First off, there will only be 999 of these things made. And considering the popularity of this endearing franchise, I would bet all of them will be purchased for. Not to mention, of course, several of them going up on Ebay days or weeks later for even more monstrous prices. The “Dawn of the Creed Legendary Collector’s Edition” (it even has a name worth hundreds of dollars) comes with a 29 inch tall statue of Bayek, presumably the protagonist. As well as this are two steelbook cases, a “certificate of authenticity”, lithographs signed by the developers, and an eagle skull amulet.
It’s a big package indeed, but worth $800? Surely there have been other collector’s editions of games that came with just as much geeky merchandise, but for a much cheaper price. Nevertheless, Ubisoft is betting that all 999 of these things will be sold. And for better or for worse, they’re probably right.
