Developer CD Projekt RED has had to make the unfortunate announcement today that some of their internal files have been stolen. Among the stolen files were early designs of Cyberpunk 2077, which is the ambitious new game that they are currently working on. Seeing as much of this game is being purposely kept private by the developer for obvious reasons, this a very serious situation.
The developer has claimed that whoever is responsible for this theft has informed them that they have the files and are demanding a ransom for their return, otherwise they will release the information on the internet. CD Projekt RED claims that they will not be giving into the thief’s demands, but they have contacted authorities. However, they are well aware that this could potentially result in the leaking of early designs of their upcoming game.
The good news is that they claim that the files that have been stolen are old and mostly don’t represent what the game currently is or will be. They do warn fans to stay away from these leaks if they do end up materializing, as they would likely spoil at least some of the game.
They ended the announcement of the theft by saying that everyone will hear more about the game when the time is right, and it will be through official means.
It’s obviously terrible news to hear of something like this happening, especially to a developer as well-respected as CD Projekt RED. Hopefully everything turns out alright and the files are returned without any leaking, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any and all information related to this incident.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a sci-fi RPG that the developer has claimed will be their most ambitious game yet, being an even bigger project than the already massive The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There’s currently no release window for the game, but the game definitely still has a long way to go before it finishes development.
