We’ve known about Ninja Theory’s Hellbalde: Senua’s Sacrifice for a while now, though fans remained in the dark regarding when the game was actually going to launch. While some were hoping that we’d be getting some form of an announcement at E3 next week, the developer has gone ahead and given us an early surprise by finally announcing the release month.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will launch for PlayStation 4 and PC this August, though a specific release date has not yet been decided. We do know that this will be a digital-only release, with not even the PlayStation 4 version getting a physical release. The game is available to pre-order now through the PlayStation Store and Steam, with the price of the game being $29.99.
Of course, those who decide to pre-order the game will get a little extra something. Pre-ordering the game on PlayStation 4 will get you a Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Dynamic Theme that features the burning tree from the game. Those who pre-order the game on PC will get an exclusive digital comic short, Hellblade: Senua’s Song, which was written by Hellblade creative director Tameem Antoniades and features art from Eisner Award nominee Ben Templesmith.
Antoniades said “We’re happy to announce Hellblade’s release date after three years of open and independent development. Hellblade has been all about trying to rejuvenate the space between ‘indie’ and AAA, where games can be creatively rich but still boast AAA quality. At around half the length of a similar AAA game and half the price, we think Hellblade will give players a unique AAA quality experience at a fair price.”
For those who are unfamiliar with the game, it’s world is based on Celtic and Norse mythology that is very psychologically-driven. The protagonist is on a very personal journey that takes her to some dark places, which includes psychotic manifestations from reality and from her own mind. It’s certainly shaping up to be something very unique, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out when it launches this August.
