The God of War series will be returning on PlayStation 4 later this year, though it will be a big departure compared to what the series has been in the past. Rather than being a linear hack and slash game, God of War PS4 will be more narrative-focused and feature combat that is more akin to the Witcher series. It looks like the game may be taking more from the Witcher series than just its combat, as now Sony has confirmed that the game features an open-world approach.
This was revealed by Sony’s Jim Ryan in an interview with Glixel, with the article mentioning that the game’s “new, more narrative-focused, open-world approach with a grizzled, bearded Kratos coming as a direct result of Sony’s new global thinking.” Ryan adds that “It’s a franchise that has historically acutely under-performed in Europe. Hack and slash games tend to not do so well in Europe, so the narrative this time around will make a big difference. European gamers love narrative games.”
The footage that Sony showed off last year of the new God of War was extremely impressive, so it looks like the developer made a good decision in tweaking the series’ formula. The previous games did not feature the best stories or a character that was all that compelling with Kratos, so it will be interesting to see how they are able to change that with the new game. We know so far that Kratos is older in this game and isn’t the tyrant that he was in the earlier games, but it remains to be seen if the old Kratos pops up at all.
It likely won’t be much longer until we learn more information on the new God of War, as it’s expected to be a big part of Sony’s E3 2017 press conference. That’s set to kick off next week, so be sure to stay tuned to get the latest details as soon as they are announced.
