It wasn’t long ago when we learned that Sonic Mania would not be meeting its Spring release, with Sega announcing that more time was needed to polish the game. They swapped the Spring release date with a Summer release window, though they didn’t give a specific release date at the time. However, today the official release date has been revealed.
Although a leak last week gave an early look at the release date, a new trailer for the game has been released today that confirms the game’s new release date of August 15th. The trailer was released to announce that digital pre-orders for the game are now available, though the announcement of the release date is even better. The news of the delay was a bummer, but it’s good to know when we will finally be able to get our hands on this game.
Sonic Mania is set to be the game that gets the series back on the right track, returning to its roots with a 2D adventure that old-school fans will recognize immediately. The game features new side-scrolling levels and remixed versions of classic ones, making this game a love letter to the classic fans. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles will all be playable in the game, and each one of them comes with their own unique abilities. Sonic moves the fastest, Tails can fly and Knuckles can climb up walls and glide.
Anticipation for the game from old-school fans continues to be high, especially when considering the talent that is behind the game. The game’s developers include Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, who are both renowned for developing great ports of older Sonic games. The game has been described as a passion project that is being spearheaded by hardcore fans of the series, and that alone should be enough to get Sonic fans excited.
Sonic Mania won’t be the only Sonic game releasing this year, as the 3D Sonic Forces is also set for a 2017 launch. That game will feature two different versions of Sonic similar to Sonic Generations, as well as allowing players to create their own character. We’re still waiting on an official release date for that game, but more information is expected to be coming at E3 2017.
