The deviously dangerous Darkest Dungeon (okay, I’ll stop) will be having an expansion drop June 19th. The Crimson Court is the first expansion for Red Hook Studio’s popular rogue-like. Crimson Court will be priced at $10 and will be released for PC initially, the PSN release being promised the following month.
Red Hook released information on the new expansion via their website. The expansion still has an air of mystery with no absolute specifics. What we do know is that there is a new class. “Awash in blood and delusion, they bear the burden of a thousand lifetimes.” We can speculate on what the class might be, but I can’t say anything with any guarantee. (P.S. it’s totally a vampire…)
The Crimson Court will also have a new roaming boss, The Fanatic. A vampire hunter and madman, this baddy will appear in dungeons when one of your heroes bears something called “the crimson curse”.
A dungeon area, The Courtyard, is also a new addition. Red Hook states that maps will be both sprawling and treacherous this go ’round. You’ll reportedly be able to save your progress mid-run. That’ll probably be necessary considering there are 4 unique bosses that roam these new and terrible zones. The new bosses will reportedly have, “some of the most complex and devious mechanics yet.”
New districts are being tossed into the expansion as well, with new prestige buildings that offer estate-wide bonuses. Last but not least, lore-driven trinket sets will also be available for all heroes.
This is a game where you can outright lose everything you’ve been working on in a very short amount of time, and perhaps that’s what makes it so charming and addictive. As if Darkest Dungeon wasn’t difficult enough, this expansion seems to be adding some further fuel to the flames, which is exactly what the game needs right now. I stopped playing it because it ran out of appeal once I played for 20 hours, but this will certainly drag me back in.
