Payday 2 has undergone an extensive amount of criticism over its loaded microtransactions and expensive DLC. As much fun as I had with the game at its release, it was the DLC that eventually killed it for me. Well, good news: Starbreeze Studio (the head parent company of Overkill) acquired the rights to the Payday franchise not too long ago and they’ve announced some changes for the PC version.
Buy your weapon packs now because all DLC is currently 85% off. The big news, however, is that by the 8th of June all the DLC will be gone and replaced by an “Ultimate Edition.” The Ultimate Edition is priced at $45 and will include all previous DLC. “There are three motives behind this: the first is to say Thank You to all our current players who have purchased the base game and any DLC by offering an opportunity to buy the remaining content for an all-time high discount of 85%.”
Overkill also stated that all future updates will be free. This is huge for players and will surely help to draw back those who have strayed (myself included). Concerning their past criticisms, they had this to say: “As developers, we have not always made the right decisions, but our community has stood by us through thick and thin.” It certainly looks like multiple steps in the right direction.
If you’re worried that you’ll have to purchase the Ultimate Edition despite having bought previous DLC, don’t fret. The announcement revealed that the price will change depending on how much DLC you’ve purchased. You won’t have to upgrade your game to Ultimate to experience the free updates either. Free is free.
Concerning consoles, Overkill said, “The Payday 2: Ultimate Edition is a Steam bundle. Console players will receive more news as additional content is made available for them.” It looks like consoles will be neglected this go ’round, but keep your hopes up. I don’t believe they’ll leave console players waiting for too long.
The announcement was a refreshing change for PC Payday fans. With the announcement of a VR mode and the ongoing development of Payday 3, Starbreeze’s new influence over Overkill seems to be getting a lot of work done. It will certainly be interesting to see the player count after the update. I for one will be reinstalling Payday 2 as soon as they put that god-awful DLC in the grave.
