One of the most well known (if not the most well known) villains in gaming has finally been given an official surname. Nintendo revealed on the official Zelda website the last name of Ganon/Ganondorf in the glossary section: Ganondorf Dragmire.
The name Dragmire first appeared in an English manual for A Link to the Past back in 1992. It has never appeared in any official capacity until this week. Zelda fans assumed for the past 25 years that the name was only applicable to that specific incarnation of Ganondorf, or that it was a throwaway name never to be considered seriously. But following the huge critical and, so far, financial success of Breath of the Wild, Nintendo has given its devoted fans this small piece of lore to chew on.
The fact that Ganondorf retains the same last name throughout all of his appearances throughout the series is big news for Zelda story theorists. It checks in with the facts revealed in Skyward Sword, the first point chronologically for the series, as explained in the Hyrule Historia. Link, Zelda and Ganon, the three beings constantly chosen by the Triforce, are reincarnated over and over again, stuck in a perpetual battle of good vs evil. Ganondorf has taken many forms, like the well known boar-like demon Ganon from A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time, or the Calamity Ganon of Breath of the Wild. Not to mention that some of Ganon’s defeats end in him being sealed away for centuries, as opposed to being destroyed, as in the ending of Ocarina of Time, or like in his backstory from Twilight Princess.
It’s still unclear when exactly Breath of the Wild Takes place. Most fans seem to agree it takes place after Ocarina, and considering locations such as Saria’s Woods or the ruins of Lon Lon Ranch, this is a safe assumption. The revealing of the name Dragmire could eventually prove to be a clue needed to solve the remaining mysteries of the Zelda timeline, but for now we can still only speculate.
