Destiny 2, the sequel to Bungie’s smash-hit RPG and one of the most anticipated games of this year, is set to release in the coming September, and there is already much buzz concerning how it will play off of the original Destiny. Questions about continuation of narrative, carry over from Destiny 1 players who worked diligently to max out light and get the best guns, and just general changes being made abound. With a following as large as Destiny’s and one that will surely see another large increase with the hype surrounding the new release, the developers feel the pressure to live up to the legacy they have created.
In doing so, one of the focal points for the Destiny 2 game designers, many of whom worked on the original game, is to avoid the game feeling like an add-on to the first, which saw a multitude of massive DLC releases over its time in the spot light. To avoid this, the developers plan on making adjustments, as well as not allowing for much carry over for even the most loyal players.
There will be new planets, although many of the ones from the old game will still be present in Destiny 2, and players will be able to carry over more nuanced or aesthetic things such as shaders, appearances, or things of that nature. Although those who put countless hours into grinding for the best gear or loot will surely be slightly disappointed with this, the biggest positive is that it levels the playing field for the hordes of new players planning to make their debuts in the Destiny 2 galaxy (myself included).
Destiny 2 will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on September 8th. More information on the game will be coming soon, as we’re set to be getting the official gameplay reveal on May 18th.
