Deck13 has released a new trailer for its upcoming futuristic action RPG, The Surge, and this one focuses on the game’s combat system. The Surge boasts a fast-paced, “technical” combat system that requires players to know what they’re doing when they enter a fight. It is said that “positioning and speed are vital” and that “exo-enhanced” moves, such as blocking, dodging, ducking, and jumping are absolutely necessary. However, you can’t continue to dodge around endlessly. You will also be required to keep an eye on their stamina.
The Surge also boasts a complex damage system that accounts for localized damage. Whether it is the player character that gets hit or an enemy, if the hit connects with an unarmored part of their body, they will take more damage.
An “industrial drone” will accompany players and help them as they attempt to avoid enemy attacks and fight back during openings. The drone has the ability to shield the player, as well as blast, burn, knock down, or pull enemies while the player fights in melee combat.
This trailer follows up on a previous trailer for The Surge, which discussed loot and equipment. You will be able to attack with either horizontal or vertical attacks and, if you hit your enemy correctly, you can dismember their limbs and loot what you’ve dismembered.
For those that haven’t been following The Surge, the game is an action RPG developed by Deck13, a company that’s primarily known for its adventure games, but also ventured into the realm of action RPGs with their previous title Venetica. You play as a character who was knocked out during a “catastrophic event” of some kind during your first day at a megacorporation known as “CREO.” When you come to, robots, co-workers, and AI have all gone rogue and want to kill you. You have no choice but to fight.
The new combat trailer for The Surge can be found embedded below. The game is currently up for pre-order on Steam for $44.99, 10% off of its normal price of $49.99, and is expected to be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 16th.
