In a new post on the official Xbox website, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, has confirmed that Xbox Project Scorpio will be unveiled at E3 this year. Spencer says in the post, “‘We’re excited to unveil Project Scorpio and the amazing game experiences it powers at E3 this June,” thus confirming what nobody was expecting or, indeed, just assumed would happen.
Microsoft announced Project Scorpio at E3 2016, touting it as the world’s most powerful console and promising that it will deliver gaming at 4K resolution. A move that will look to set back the successes of Sony’s PS4 and their recent iteration, PS4 Pro. The PS4 Pro also offers 4K resolution, albeit not native, by using a technique called ‘checkerboarding.’ This technique, as explained to DigitalFoundry, by lead PS4 architect, Mark Cerny, is a custom upscaling solution.
Spencer reiterates Xbox’s commitment to backwards compatibility in the post, writing: “With Project Scorpio, we set a design goal of building the first true 4K console for gamers with an emphasis on compatibility so no one gets left behind.” Tech specifications for Project Scorpio have already been revealed and from what we’ve seen, Microsoft looks to be on track to keep their promise of making the world’s most powerful console. Microsoft needs a big win with Project Scorpio, as Sony have comfortably become the market leader when it comes to home consoles.
The post also focused on Xbox’s plans for players to move their gaming experience seamlessly between console and PC, writing about the Project Scorpio development kit, “We built this special dev kit by evaluating every piece, from hardware to software and tools, with developers and compatibility in mind. We paid attention to logistical details, like dramatically speeding up how quickly a developer can move their work between PC and dev kit, and made it easy to program and test changes at the literal press of a button on the front of the box.”
E3 2017 will take place this June, with the Xbox E3 press briefing to be held on Sunday the 11th, at 2pm PT/ 5PM ET, and at 7PM in the UK.
