Michiel van der Leeuw, technical director of Guerilla Games, made an announcement today over at the company’s website. The creators of Horizon Zero Dawn are now working with Kojima Productions, a company who is obviously most famous for the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Despite the fact that KojiPro is currently working on Death Stranding, it seems they are already working on a collaboration. They are forming a new organization, and it is called Kojima Amsterdam.
“…you need to have a name. Otherwise you can’t announce it.”
Not much has been revealed so far, though it does fit a pattern of behavior between the two companies over the past few months. Guerrilla Games has shared their “Decima” engine with KojiPro for developing Death Stranding. Van der Leeuw says that working with the Japan-based company has been so fulfilling, that they decided to evolve their relationship.
Technical director van der Leeuw also wrote that “There’s a real connection between the teams in many levels and it’s going to be so much fun making that closer and richer.” Whatever it is that KojiPro and Guerrilla have in common, it must be something special. It’s hard to imagine someone out there that can find a lot to share with an auteur as unpredictable as Kojima. Regardless of the speculation, their future announcements will surely spark the interest of many.
“We’re setting up a small outpost in the form of Kojima Amsterdam to make that work.”
Kojima Productions is currently still working on Death Stranding, which may not come to stores for over a year. Kojima Amsterdam’s exact size has not been disclosed so far, but chances are it won’t take too many resources away from KojiPro’s main project. Death Stranding is already enough of a cryptic mystery itself, as is Kojima’s M.O. We can only expect whatever new projects to emerge from this coupling to be relatively secretive, too.
