The veritably ancient and well-respected sci-fi MMORPG Anarchy Online is celebrating its 15th anniversary today. To commemorate the occasion, Funcom is releasing a slew of new content and features for its truly stalwart player bas. (And hopefully a few newcomers.) Updates include new armor pieces, login rewards, item research lines and a new event dubbed Desert Rider.
Anarchy Online holds the distinction of being one of the longest running MMO’s online today, alongside its other high-school aged buddies Final Fantasy XI and Runescape. But it’s more well known for being the first instance of a science fiction setting in the genre, something that, oddly enough, usually meant certain death in the old days of the massive multiplayer online realm, as well as being an early example of an MMO to implement a free-to-play model. (We barely knew ye, Tabula Rasa.) These days the title still sees a respectable stable of players and even had a new rendering engine debut last year.
I’ve never been a big MMO player, but I’ve dipped my toes in the Star Wars and Final Fantasy pools before and had an enjoyable time. They’re usually good for a few dozen hours of fun and for savoring a new and interesting game world, if nothing else, especially one as well-known and regarded as Anarchy Online. If you’re interested in further exploring a very well-explored sci-fi MMO, then you can check out the games official site.
