Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is looking to encroach upon Hearthstone’s patch of turf. A new mechanic will ease the uncertainty that may irritate players when decided to part with their cash for new card packs.
There is of course an element of fun and excitement in the randomness of opening card packs and in CD Projekt’s new standalone Gwent game there will be a way to strike a balance between fun and disappointment. In an interview with Eurogamer, the developer touched upon a mechanic whereby the player has the option to ditch certain cards that are previewed to them in an effort to avoid collecting – and crucially paying for – duplicates. These ditched cards will be replaced by randomly generated ones, and so the excitement of the unknown will still be present.
Principal Narrative Designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said, “We have our own thoughts about card games in general, and we felt this innovation would reduce the frustration you sometimes get if you get all the cards you don’t want to have…this gives you at least some degree of control and you feel like you can pick what you like the best.”
The pain of spending one’s hard-earned (definitely not) pocket money on a Pokémon booster pack, only to find it filled with cards already owned, is something that the folks at CD Projekt clearly remember as bitterly as I do – and they are looking to soften the blow.
