Blackmill Games and H2M’s just officially announced that their intimate WWI trench shooter Verdun will be coming to PS4, and Xbox One in August. Verdun has been out on PC since April 2015, and has managed to keep itself somewhat relevant through numerous updates and patches. According to the developers, the the console versions are entering their last polishing phase. Where they will iron out any kinks before the launch on August 30th. Along side this announcement came a trailer they posted on their official YouTube page. With the recent announcement of Battlefield 1 by EA Dice, which is also a WWI shooter it will be interesting to see how both of these games do critically and with the general audience. With the release almost two months before Battlefield 1, it should be interesting to see how it fairs on consoles. Although H2M and Blackmill Games seem to be confident with the game they have created. Stating in their press release. “Verdun has attracted over 460,000 players and won several awards including: IndieDB Editors Choice; Best Multiplayer 2015, Best Economic Achievement Award 2015…”.
Whether Verdun will come with new/exclusive content is unclear at the moment. It might be beneficial for the developers to help spread awareness for a game that doesn’t have the largest of audiences. However, it seems as though the audience they do have is a very supportive one. Another good call would be to offer the game free for Playstation Plus members and/or Xbox Live Gold member. In the past we have seen games that have not had much buzz prior to launch be very successful, mostly in part to these offers.
Verdun is a first person shooter set in a realistic WWI setting. The primary focus being incredibly tense trench warfare. The game takes place in the western front between 1914 and 1918 in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. Offering four different game modes and a variety of squads, it will be interesting to see how the console audience perceives this unique game.
