The Jason Sudeikis comedy from Bill Lawrence will return July 23.
Break out the biscuits, Apple’s Ted Lasso is returning for its second season this summer.
On Tuesday during the Apple Event, the tech giant unspooled the trailer for the upcoming second season of its Jason Sudeikis comedy from Bill Lawrence and announced that it would return July 23.
It’s unclear how many episodes will launch July 23. Season one launched with three episodes before shifting to a weekly rollout. The plan for season two will again see episodes released weekly.
The breakout comedy in which SNL grad Sudeikis reprises his 2013 role as the beleaguered American soccer coach from a series of NBC Sports promotional videos broke out last year and has already netted its star and co-creator a series of awards including a Golden Globe and SAG trophy. Apple showed early faith in Ted Lasso and has already handed out an early season three renewal for the comedy from Universal Television and Warner Bros. TV.
Production on season two began in London in January. Lawrence, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter podcast TV’s Top 5, said Ted Lasso will not be among the programs that write the novel coronavirus pandemic into its scripts. “When we shot it the first time, this wasn’t on our radar,” he said. “If [COVID-19] is still a day-to-day issue when a second season would come out … people are going to want escapist entertainment. … Half-empty stadiums with Zoom crowds? It’s too weird to even be writing.”
Lawrence, Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly developed the series. Sudeikis stars alongside Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Hunt, Nick Mohammed and Juno Temple.
