During this week’s podcast, hosts Daniel Fienberg and Lesley Goldberg also explore Netflix’s strategy shift and pay tribute to the late and great Jessica Walter and George Segal.
Welcome to Episode 113 of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. RIP Jessica Walter and George Segal.
Two comedic greats passed away this week. In this segment, we pay tribute to the Arrested Development and Archer leading lady and her frequent co-star George Segal, whose passing leaves a big void on ABC’s The Goldbergs.
2. All about that IP.
Stop us if you’ve heard it before but IP continues to be a big priority for, well, everyone. This segment looks at the news of the week and how it connects into a larger strategy for broadcast networks and streamers.
3. Netflix’s strategy shift.
The streaming giant announced this week that it is rolling out two unscripted favorites in a semi-weekly format. So what does this mean for scripted? This segment explores the streamer’s latest release date changes — including expanding beyond Friday bows.
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
Malcolm Spellman joins the podcast this week to discuss Marvel’s second Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The wide-ranging interview touches on the show’s exploration of race and PTSD and much more.
5. Critic’s Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan’s guide to what to watch (or skip) in the week ahead. This week, he offers reviews of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Invincible, The Irregulars and United States of Al.
Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or Mailbag questions you’d like to be addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
Coming next week: We are joined by the legendary Ken Burns and his frequent collaborator Lynn Novick for an interview about PBS’ Hemingway (and yes, some baseball talk).
