Newly minted Angeleno Prince Harry joined James Corden for an open-top bus tour on Thursday’s Late Late Show. The Duke of Sussex was taken aback by Corden picking him up in a “subtle” bus rather than a Range Rover, but the host shot back that “it would be a nice way to see L.A.” Harry admitted that it was the first time he had been on an open-top bus as he “was not really allowed to” get on them and that he regretted never being able to go sightseeing. He also added that due to the lockdown, this was his first chance to see L.A.
Corden made sure the prince wasn’t missing home by serving up tea as they took in the sights, including “bringing class to the 405.” Although a tea trolley on a moving bus turned out to be not such a great idea.
The pair made a stop at the house used for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Corden tested the prince’s knowledge of the iconic theme song before dropping in on the rather shocked owner of the house for an impromptu royal visit.
Corden tried to convince the prince to move into the Fresh Prince mansion and even engaged the Duchess of Sussex over FaceTime to convince them.
Corden also asked Harry how he felt about Netflix’s The Crown. The prince, who has a production deal with Netflix, said The Crown doesn’t “pretend to be news, it’s fictional. But it’s loosely based on the truth.”
“Of course, it’s not strictly accurate,” the prince added. “It gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle [is like], what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else are, and what can come from that.”
When Corden asked the prince who he’d like to portray him in The Crown, he picked redhead Damian Lewis.
The prince also explained his reasons for “stepping away, not stepping down” from the Royal Family. He spoke about how the British press was destroying his mental health. Describing the situation in Britain as “toxic,” the prince said, “I did what any husband, any father would do, I needed to get my family out of there.”
But he reiterated that he “never walked away” and “never will walk away” from the Royal Family and public service.
