The author and actress will star in the potential series as part of her overall deal with producers ABC Signature.
Phoebe Robinson is bringing her book Everything’s Trash, but It’s Okay to life for Freeform.
The 2 Dope Queens breakout will star in and write the script for the potential series, which has been picked up as a half-hour comedy pilot at the Disney-owned younger-skewing cable network.
The comedy follows Phoebe (Robinson), a 30-something podcast star navigating her messy life. When her younger brother, Jayden, emerges as a leading politician, she’s forced to grow up and relies on her friends and close-knit family to help her figure out adulthood — since she doesn’t seem to have a clue.
Robinson’s book, published in 2018, is a collection of essays about gender, race and dating.
Robinson will also executive produce Everything’s Trash alongside former Black-ish showrunner Jonathan Groff. The project is produced by ABC Signature and stems from the overall deal Robinson signed with the studio in 2019.
This will be the second of Robinson’s projects to be adapted for television. The writer, stand-up comedian and actress also co-created and co-stars in beloved podcast-turned-HBO comedy 2 Dope Queens. The podcast — a popular interview show she co-created and co-starred in alongside Jessica Williams — signed off in late 2018 with Michelle Obama as its final guest.
Everything’s Trash is the second pilot pickup at Freeform since Tara Duncan took over the basic cable network last year when she replaced Tom Ascheim as president.
The project arrives as Duncan’s vision for Freeform is beginning to take shape. Since starting last June, she renewed The Bold Type for a final season, axed Siren and is developing new projects with the likes of Empire’s Sanaa Hamri and Danny Strong, LeBron James and Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi, among others. Additional Freeform announcements are expected to come Friday as part of the cabler’s (virtual) time with critics at the Television Critics Association.
