Appearing as a guest on the late-night show Friday, the former senior counsel shared her view of Trump’s time in office, while Maher referenced the fact that many people have died during his administration.
Kellyanne Conway staunchly defended President Trump and his legacy when she appeared as a guest on Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday.
“How do you look back, four years later, anything go wrong?” Maher asked the former senior counsel to Trump right off the bat. “A lot went right, and he will be remembered for that,” answered Conway. She did acknowledge that the violent events that occurred at the U.S. Capitol were “vulgar” and later referred to the Government as “messy.”
Maher berated her about the fact that she didn’t publicly acknowledge Biden’s election win until Dec. 4, weeks after he was projected to have won the election, though Conway was unsure of the exact date when the public acknowledgement took place.
“The real disappointment for people like me is that the last two months weren’t spent mostly talking about the accomplishments,” she went on to say, citing the improvements she believes Trump made to corporate tax rates, the poverty rate, wages, manufacturing, the rise in energy jobs. “He rebuilt the military,” she said to Maher. Conway later emphasized how Trump is the first modern president “to not bring us into a war” and that “many lessons” can be learned from his time in office.
In Maher’s earlier monologue, he called it “historic” for Trump to be impeached a second time. “He’s like the vaccine, you need two doses, and still no guarantees,” the late-night host joked.
Speaking with Conway, Maher went on to say that one of the lessons learned is that we shouldn’t humor “crazy people” when they’re in power. Conway referenced a lunch she had with Trump before Christmas where they spoke about the stimulus package, his legacy and the future. Although Conway left the White House in August, Maher called her a “defender” as if she is still working for them. “You can’t deny that many people are better off,” Conway said of the way Trump has left the economy. “They’re not better off now, a lot of them are dead,” said Maher.
Toward the end of the interview, Maher noted that no President is completely truthful, but that Trump did “a lot more” lying than most. Conway — who helped run Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 and was one of his longest serving senior advisors — noted she has seen him be very compassionate toward people. They continued to disagree whether Trump “hurls insults” at others.
Conway, who tested positive for COVID-19 in October and experienced mild symptoms, said she looks at the “good that was done” while Trump was in office, and noted that Government tends to be “messy.” She talked about how Trump supporters felt they had more visibility and a voice, adding that his legacy and the policies he initiated “will survive a lot of this.”
