She also starred in a short-lived 1988 sitcom, ‘Raising Miranda.’
Royana Black, who appeared on Broadway in Brighton Beach Memoirs and starred as the title character on the short-lived sitcom Raising Miranda, has died. She was 47.
Black died July 14 in Los Angeles after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia, her family announced.
When she was 10, Black joined the cast of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs in 1983 to portray Laurie, the younger cousin of Eugene (Matthew Broderick) and daughter of Blanche (Joyce Van Patten) who has heart problems.
In 1988, she starred as the daughter of a single dad (James Naughton) on Raising Miranda, but the CBS sitcom aired just nine episodes before it was canceled.
Born on March 1, 1973, in Poughkeepsie, New York, Black graduated from Yale in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Victorian literature.
She went on to guest-star on series including Medium, The Cosby Show and Touched by an Angel and serve as artistic director and chair of the Alliance Repertory Company in Burbank.
Survivors include her husband of 11 years, actor J.P. Hubbell; her mother, Gloria; and her brother, Robert. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help her family.
