Upon hearing the pitch for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, writer Beau DeMayo had a very positive and candid reaction. DeMayo, who has also written for The Originals and The Witcher, recently joined Moon Knight’s writing staff. The series’ head writer is Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy), who was officially added to the team last November. Moon Knight is one of several upcoming Marvel shows headed to Disney+, the first of which being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Moon Knight has yet to receive an official release date, but many expect it to arrive sometime next year.

Moon Knight is a Marvel project with few known details. The lead role of Marc Spector has yet to be cast, though it has been reported that Marvel is looking for a Jewish-Israeli Zac Efron-type. The series was initially expected to begin production late this summer, but that date has since been shifted to November. Other Marvel shows expected to arrive on Disney+ ahead of Moon Knight include WandaVision, Loki, and She-Hulk.

While talking to ComicBook.com, DeMayo offered some spoiler-free teases about Moon Knight. DeMayo insisted fans of the character will be thrilled with the series, and that’s largely due to Slater’s vision. In DeMayo’s words, “I know just as a fan, when they told me the take, I was just like, ‘Oh shit, I want to watch that.” He expanded upon this by saying:
All I can really say is, one, [showrunner] Jeremy Slater is a frigging badass. He’s so smart. He is a great, awesome guy to work for. And then, I know it sounds like pandering but it is so true that, as a fan coming into Marvel, it is so amazing to see the… we’ve heard it before with Kevin [Feige] and everybody’s just… They do really care.
While Moon Knight is an established comic book character, general audiences aren’t as familiar with him. This Disney+ series stands out from others because, unlike WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it will be centered on a character that has yet to appear within the MCU. Two other Disney+ shows, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, are the same, but those characters have connections to already-established characters audiences are familiar with. Moon Knight doesn’t quite have that distinction, meaning it will need to do more to appeal to general audiences.
Based on DeMayo’s enthusiastic comments, however, Marvel might not have to worry much. It sounds like the series will be well-received by comic book fans, and Marvel has a good track record of getting non-comic fans interested in lesser-known characters. Plus, Moon Knight is likely to appear in a few movies down the line, which will in turn direct people to the series. Since production has been pushed back slightly, it might be a while before further details about Moon Knight are made public, but hopefully these positive comments will keep fans going until then.
