The eSports scene has been growing steadily in the last few years all over the world. China and South Korea have been among the first countries to actively support eSports, starting a movement that soon involved the United States and good part of Europe. The UK has slightly lagged behind and only today, 30/06/2016, the Government established a non for profit organisation to represent English players, teams, organisations and broadcasters, called the British eSports Association.
Jules Robinson, Head of Business Development at Pinewood Studios (where the Association will be based), commented that the formation of such an institution will increase the credibility of the UK eSports scene and serve a support platform from which the scene as a whole will be able to grow. The next three months will see the Association building contacts and relationships with the various organisations that organise tournaments and leagues, the teams and the relevant people of interest in order to make sure that everybody is going to be represented properly.
I believe that in a few years time eSports are going to gather a share of followers comparable to the ones of major regular sports like football and basketball. The steps that countries and organisations around the world are taking are very promising, and the formation of the British eSports Association is a strong confirmation of this positive trend.
