ArenaNet, developers of Guild Wars 2, have just made it very profitable to be a gamer by announcing their biggest ever world championship, that will be taking place on September 17 this year. With the 2016 season coming to a close, ArenaNet have decided to make a big splash! Not content on creating one of the most popular MMO’s around, they’ve seen fit to form a partnership with ESL, in order to provide a whopping $200,000 prize pool. The top six teams in the guild wars world will head to the ESL studios in Burbank, with the hope of taking the title of “Guild Wars Gods” as well as the first place prize of $100,000, which is nothing to be scoffed at!
The season 2 finale that will decide the top six teams from two regions, are taking place this weekend on June 25. Those 12 teams will then be narrowed down to the final mighty six in online qualifiers taking place in August, the victors of which will then duke it out in the final transatlantic Guild Wars 2 championship! If you can afford the $10 ticket fee this weekend, the finals will definitely be worth a watch with such high stakes! Expect no prisoners to be taken and no holds to be barred! This announcement marks the next step in the evolution of Esports as a form of entertainment and it will be interesting to see how many other games begin to adapt and develop with Esports in mind. Craig Levine, CEO of ESL had this to say on the matter…
“the World Championship demonstrates the influence of eSports as it continues to grow while spanning different titles and genres”
All in all this is a great move from ArenaNet and I for one will be watching some Charr exchange blows with a few Sylvari this weekend. If you want to do the same head over to www.eventbrite.com to support your favourite team or cheer on the wonderful cause of Esports!
