In between the age of 15 and 16 Scandinavian youth faces an important crossroad in life and for their journey towards their dream work. Namely when they choose which high-school curriculum to study. Therefore, it should come as a pleasant surprise for Norwegian gamers who aims towards reaching the well-paid elite of e-sportsmen that Garnes Vidaregåande Skole has added an eSports curriculum for e-sportsmen to join.
As eSports becomes a larger, more accepted, and respected industry even in the mainstream community with a seemingly endlessly growing numbers of spectators and enthusiasts moves like these might not become extraordinary in a not too distant future, and despite being early on the ball, the Norwegian school is not first. Their neighbouring country Sweden already has an eSports curriculum running at Arlanda Gymnasium which had people from all over Europe sending in their applications to join and more is on its way in response to its international success and students there get to study their sport four lessons per weak mixed with ordinary subjects and physical training mixed with sports psychology and play intelligence.
Students at the new eSports Curriculum in Norway can expect to be provided with great gear by the school for their studies. The school will provide with high end PCs to use during lessons to ensure the best possible training space for the next generation of sportsmen to train with containing GeForce GTX 980Ti graphic cards. However, students are expected to supply with their own headsets, mouse and other external hardware as it might get sweaty during pressure and everyone has their own preferences when it comes to gear like this. All to ensure that the best training local possible is provided.
It feels strange today to look back just 10 years in time. Back then it would be seen as a crazy pipe-dream that we 2015-2016 would have eSports curricula at high schools. However, it just shows how much the gaming community has grown both in with and popularity and is a great proof to show that if it can be imagined, it can become a reality. Class starts during autumn 2016 for the first class to attend the new eSports curriculum in Norway, and I am certain it is with enthusiasm they will start their new school!
