Luigi’s Mansion was one of the strangest and most unlikely Nintendo games to ever be released by the company, but it ended up being a risk that worked. The GameCube original that launched all the way back in 2001 was a solid launch title for the console, and the 3DS’ Dark Moon that released 12 years later was an excellent sequel. This all begs the question: when will we get Luigi’s Mansion 3?
Luigi’s Mansion 3 2018 for Switch?
While Nintendo hasn’t directly commented on there being another installment in the Luigi’s Mansion franchise, there have nevertheless been tidbits from the company that have given fans hope. It’s unlikely that the next game would release for the 3DS, but with the big success of the Switch it seems very possible that it could eventually emerge on that platform. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has gone on record saying he hopes to bring all Nintendo franchises to Switch, and while Luigi’s Mansion isn’t a major Nintendo franchise it still falls under that umbrella.
This is a question that would have seemed ridiculous several years back, but the surprise release of Dark Moon and its subsequent critical acclaim has fans thirsty for more. Luigi’s Mansion 3 has remained in the rumor mill for a long time now, as there were even rumors that it could end up coming to Wii U at one point. However, considering that console’s very underwhelming sales, it definitely wouldn’t have been a smart move to release a niche series like Luigi’s Mansion on the console.
With the Switch, though, it’s a whole new ball game. The console isn’t even in its first full year on the market, but it’s the console that everyone is still talking about and more and more third-party developers are announcing their support for it going forward. With bigger support and sales, that means that there are countless more opportunities for the smaller Nintendo series to show themselves again. The Switch would be a great home for Luigi’s Mansion, especially considering that fans could play it at home or on the road. The first game was a home console exclusive and the second was a portable exclusive, but the third game could have the best of both worlds.
This is all purely speculation at this point, but we’d personally love to see Luigi’s Mansion 3 happen on Switch. Whether that happens in 2018, beyond or never is anyone’s guess, but there would be a lot of fans out there that would scoop it up on day one with no questions asked. Nintendo likes to keep their announcements close to the chest, so if the game is in the works we won’t know about it until it’s pretty close to launch. For now, we’ll all just have to keep our fingers crossed.
