Even after 20 years, we still look back on the N64 as one of the most treasured video game systems of all time. 20 years is a long time for a console to still hold such a big place in players’ hearts, and despite not being the very best in terms of graphical quality, it was still one of the biggest successes in the video game industry! Today I wanted to look back on my favourite N64 games of all time.
Star Fox N64
Star Fox N64 was one of the biggest and best N64 releases back in the late 90’s. This sequel to Star Fox for the SNES was a huge success and enabled players to experience a 3D space-flight simulator packed with a few twists and turns along the way. Fox McCloud is joined with his trusty teammates, Peppy, Slippy and Falco to help him take on the depths of the Lylat system and defend it from the corrupt and evil powers of Andross.
Super Mario 64
How could I not mention this beast of a video game? Super Mario 64 was one of the most successful and sought after video games back in the 90’s and flew off the shelves quicker than anyone expected. This 3D plat former was enough to keep me and my brother entertained for hours on end, and it was certainly a game I will never forget. This title is based in the depths of Princess Peach’s castle, where you must find and save her from the evil grasps of Mario’s arch enemy, Bowser.
Super Smash Brothers
I know that if I didn’t include SSB in this list then a lot of people would be mad, so how couldn’t I? Plus, Super Smash Brothers is a damn good game packed full of endless fun and with a combat system to die for. SSB for the N64 was released back in 1999 after a huge success over in Japan. After SSB hit store shelves world wide, people were going crazy for this game. Super Smash Brothers included some of the most popular video game characters of all time, including Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Pikachu and Link, and I truthfully think this was of the reasons for it’s huge worldwide success.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time
This definitely has to be one of my favourite games of all time, and I know a lot of people will agree with me. Ocarina of time was released back in 1998, and is still one of the most popular and treasured video games of all time. Besides it’s fantastic and gripping story line, Zelda also provided players with one of the most immersive video game worlds to date. Throughout Ocarina of time, you will take Link on an adventure to protect the Triforce and stop Ganondorf from discovering it and destroying it forever.
Golden Eye 007
GoldenEye 007 was originally released back in 1997, after the success of the 1995 James Bond movie, GoldenEye. Despite it only being an exclusive release for the N64, it was a huge success and definitely deserves a place in my top list of N64 games. You will take James on a single player adventure to join the BSIS (British Secret Intelligence Service) to protect London from a global financial meltdown. GoldenEye is a free roaming shooter, jam packed with action and thrills to keep you enthralled for hours. GoldenEye 007 sold over eight million copies worldwide and continues to be a success all around the world. It is certainly a video game I will never forget.
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart was a huge part of my childhood and still continues to be a part of my life, even at the age of 20. Throughout my younger years, I spent the majority of my time sat on the living room floor with a controller in my hand. Mario Kart 64 is a racing game released back in 1996, consisting of a number of characters challenging each other in four different game modes including Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus mode and Battle Mode. Mario Kart 64 included a number of immersive 3D maps, challenging obstacles and boosts to help along the way.
Looking back on the N64 games I have mentioned in this article, I can really reflect on how much all of these games impacted my life from such a young age. The nostalgia has certainly hit me today, and I know a lot of people around the world feel exactly the same way.
