Nintendo held their Nintendo Direct event recently, where they talked about some new games that are on the horizon for their consoles. While Splatoon 2 and Arms were set to be the big focuses of the event, Pikmin fans around the world got a surprise in the form of an official title and announcement for the previously-announced 3DS Pikmin game.
Hey! Pikmin was announced by the company during the event, which will be coming exclusively to the Nintendo 3DS on July 28th. An official trailer for the game wasn’t released, but we did get a decent slice of gameplay to check out that you can see at the bottom of this post. Fans will notice immediately that it actually doesn’t play like the previous games in the series, with this one being a spin-off. You still order around the little creatures to help you out, but now it’s all within the space of a 2D platformer.
Amiibo fans will also be happy to know that a new Pikmin amiibo was also announced during the event, which is shown off briefly at the end of the aforementioned video. It has a few different Pikmin that are near or on top of an object, and it’s unsurprisingly adorable. As for what it does within the game, when you tap it to your 3DS screen it will call in backup Pikmin to help you out. A price for the amiibo was not announced during the event, though that information will likely be coming soon.
For those of you who may be upset that this isn’t a mainline Pikmin game, Pikmin 4 is still in development. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said in July of 2015 that the game is very close to completion, but we have gotten very few updates on the game since then. This could end up being because they’re reworking the game for a Switch release, seeing as the Wii U is pretty much a goner at this point. Hopefully more information will be coming at some point later this year.
