This year marks the 25th anniversary of SEGA’s well-known mascot Sonic the Hedgehog, and during their E3 stream today, Sonic Team announced that they would be celebrating the spiky speedster’s birthday with a party on July 22 at San Diego Comic Con. Not only that, but EU fans will have the chance to win a free trip by proving their Sonic obsessions online. Simply by going to http://bit.ly/Sonic25EU and submitting a five minute video to showcase their superfan status, EU fans will have the opportunity to attend what Sonic PR rep Aaron Webber referred to as “the one day of the year you’re not going to want to miss, if you are a Sonic fan.”
The reveal comes one week after the announcement of the new game Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice for the 3DS, the third installment in the spin-off Sonic Boom series. The first two games, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and The Shattered Crystal, along with a computer-animated television series, launched in November of 2014. While the first two Sonic Boom games received mixed reviews, Webber is optimistic about the performance of the upcoming title. “We delayed the game,” he told interviewers during the stream, “We never delay Sonic games.” Indeed, Sonic Team has come under fire in the past for rushing their games out without optimal testing. Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is available for demo play now at E3, and is rapidly approaching its new release date of September 2016.
SEGA also used their stream to show off upcoming games such as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III on PC, and the worldwide release of Yakuza 0 for the Playstation 4, both expected to come out in 2017.
