Xiaomi is no stranger from smartphones with huge screens. Two of the largest handsets delivered by the Chinese company are the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and last year’s Xiaomi Mi Mix. They have the large display in common, but otherwise, they are quite different. One of the main difference between them is their price range. Is the Xiaomi Mi Mix really that impressive that you should pay $200 more for it? Let’s take a look at what they have to offer for their price.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2
Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. Even though its moniker might make people think it is really similar to the Mi Mix, possible customers will see at first glance that they are quite different in design. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has a 6.44-inch display, but it doesn’t have the bezel-less design of the 2016 Xiaomi Mi Mix. The side bezels are indeed quite slim, but the existence of the bezels on the top and bottom of the handset make it quite a large one. It is a rather slim device, but it is large, making it quite hard to handle one-handed. The full metal unibody and its rounded edges make it look premium, but users should have in mind its size when purchasing it.
The 6.44-inch display has a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution, which ensures a decent visual experience. It’s not as impressive as the QHD display of some flagship smartphone’s, but it still is a nice display that is able to deliver clear and detailed images with bright and accurate colors. As for the power, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset that is known for its energy-efficiency. It’s rather surprising that Xiaomi did not deliver its handset with the newer, more efficient Snapdragon 660, but it is probably a more cost-efficient decision. The handset includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. It also supports up to 256GB of external storage.
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 features a 12MP back camera with dual-LED flash and autofocus, and a 5MP front-facing camera for selfies. The cameras are able to capture some really good quality images, so users won’t be disappointed by them. What is really impressive, is the handset’s 5,300mAh battery. We seldom see such big batteries in smartphones. This battery is able to ensure a great battery life for the smartphone. The handset also features quick charging support, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added security, and a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer.
The 64GB storage version is available for purchase for $319.99, while those who would like to have 128GB of storage will have to pay $386.99 for the smartphone. While it’s not an outrageously high price, it’s not the most affordable one either.

Xiaomi Mi Mix
The Xiaomi Mi Mix has the same 6.4-inch display as the Xiaomi Mi Max 2, but thanks to its bezel-less design, it is a lot smaller than the Mi Max 2. This makes it a lot easier to handle one-handed. The screen-to-body ratio is also more impressive. The Xiaomi Mi Mix is not totally bezel-less. It still keeps the bottom bezel, but on the top and the sides, the bezels are almost inexistent. Due to the lack of bezels on the top, Xiaomi needed to move the selfie camera to the bottom of the handset. This is quite unusual, but it’s not necessarily a turnoff. Overall, the design of the Mi Mix is a nice and innovative one, which makes the handset look and feel premium.
The 6.4-inch display of the handset has a 1080 x 2040 pixels resolution. This grants it a higher pixel density, which means the images on the Mi Mix will be slightly clearer and more detailed than the ones displayed by the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The Xiaomi Mi Mix has a more powerful, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset under the hood. The smartphone comes in two different variants: one of them includes 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage while the other one offers 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Users should take their time considering which version they will opt for as the Mi Mix doesn’t support any additional storage.
In terms of cameras, the Xiaomi Mi Mix does a little better than the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. It has a 16MP primary camera and a 5MP front-facing snapper. While the selfie camera is the same, there will be a difference in the quality of the images taken with the primary camera. The battery of the Mi Mix smartphone is considerably smaller than the one of the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. It is only a 4,400mAh one, but it still is enough to ensure a full day’s worth of battery life. Also, the handset offers fast-charging support. The Xiaomi Mi Mix has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and it runs on Android Marshmallow out of the box. However, it can be updated to Nougat.
Naturally, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is more expensive than the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage version costs $523.99. Those who opt for the 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage version will have to dig deeper in their pockets, as it costs $599.99.
Specs

– octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor
– 4GB/6GB RAM
– 128GB/256GB storage
– 16 MP rear camera, 5MP secondary camera
– 4.400 mAh battery
Bottom Line
The Xiaomi Mi Mix is definitely worth the extra money. It has a more innovative design, offers a lot more power, a better back camera, and it can be updated to the same operating system version. This doesn’t mean that the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is not a good smartphone. It is. However, the Mi Mix, even though it is a model from last year, still is better. Even so, maybe it is not the best time to purchase the Xiaomi Mi Mix. According to rumors, the Mi Mix 2 will be here soon, so maybe it would be a good idea to wait a little longer and see what that handset will have to offer.
