Samsung usually launches the rugged version of its Galaxy S flagships in June. Nothing suggests that this won’t be the case this year too. Images of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active popped up on the Wireless Power Consortium site, showing off the upcoming device. Unfortunately for those who thought they will get the beautiful curved infinity display, it seems this will be a no-show on the Active. Of course, this is a reasonable compromise, given the fact that curved screens crack more easily. After all, the whole idea behind the Galaxy S Active line is the ruggedness of the handsets.
Instead of the beautiful curved screen of the Galaxy S8, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will feature a flat screen. However, it maintains the size of the Galaxy S8 and its almost bezel-less design. The bezels on the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active might be slightly thicker, but the result will still be a large, amazing screen. Also, the Active smartphone will come with a hard casing on its side. Surprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active doesn’t bring back the physical home button. This decision was probably influenced by the fact that Samsung intends to keep the design as close as possible to the one of the original Galaxy S8. Even though the design itself is gorgeous, it might not work for active people. Especially when they need to use the handset with wet hands. In this case, a physical button would have been a lot more comfortable to handle than a touchscreen.
Previous Active models kept the display size of the original Galaxy S handsets. It’s safe to assume that this won’t change this time around either. In this case, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will sport a 5.8-inch quadHD screen. Just like its original counterpart, the S8 Active will be IP68 certified, so it will be dust and waterproof. The handset will be covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 5, so it should also be shatterproof.
On the inside, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will have the same powerful features as the Samsung Galaxy S8. These include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone will also feature the same 12MP back camera and 8MP secondary camera as the original model has. What seems to change is the battery. Instead of the Galaxy S8’s 3,000mAh battery, the Active will most likely sport a larger, 4,000mAh one.
Samsung did not announce the launch date of the Galaxy S8 Active yet. Based on previous years, we can safely assume that it will announce the handset sometime in June. Also based on the experience of previous years, we think that this year too, the Active will be exclusive for AT&T. We can expect to see Camo Green, Titanium Gray, and Sandy Gold color options. As for the pricing, unfortunately, it’s highly likely that the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will have a high-end price tag. We will have more details once Samsung announces the new device. There are only a few more weeks to go, so we’ll know soon enough.
