Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus might be the smartphones many of us would like to have but let’s face it, we don’t really need. A budget phone is usually more than capable of meeting all our needs. One of these budget phones is the Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime which just launched in the US. It might not have all the features of a flagship smartphone but it has a decent specs sheet and a more than reasonable $150 price tag. The handset is now available at T-Mobile and it will probably become available at other carriers and unlocked as well.
The Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime features a 5-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution. This is far from being as cool as a 4K screen, but it is more than enough to display decent looking images and nice colors. It comes with a quad-core Exynos 7570 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz and 1.5GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime includes 16GB of internal storage and it supports up to 128GB of additional storage. This is more than enough for a regular user to store all their favorite content on their smartphone. In terms of cameras, the Samsung J3 Prime is rather disappointing. In the past few months, even the budget phones came with impressive snappers. Samsung settled for a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing one.
The 2,600mAh battery of the handset is capable of taking users through the day without any difficulties. Even though a bigger battery would have been more impressive, the truth is that at this size and with this processor, the J3 Prime doesn’t really need a larger one. Probably the best feature of this smartphone is its software. The handset runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, which is great. It’s not unusual for budget phones to come with the latest operating system versions, but we have seen some new devices still rocking the Android Marshmallow recently. Samsung earns one point at least in this section.
Overall, the Galaxy J3 Prime is a nice budget phone. It has the signature Samsung Galaxy look with its rounded corners and physical home button on the front, and it even has a nice brushed metal finish stripe on the back to make the design a more interesting one. It’s not an interesting smartphone for those who would like to have the latest features in their handsets, but it is a good one for those who need a smartphone only for phone calls, texting, a little web browsing and for checking their emails. And no one could reasonably expect more than this from a smartphone that only costs $150.
