DJI finally revealed all there is to know about its FPV goggles. We’ve first heard of them last year when the drone manufacturer teased them at the Mavic Pro event. Ever since then we were hoping to find out more about them. Now we can preorder them for $499. The DJI Goggles, as they are called, will only start shipping at the end of May, so don’t get all that excited about them just yet. On the other hand, they are amazing, so you can get pretty excited. Let’s see what they have to offer for almost $500.
First of all, the DJI Goggles look somewhat like the PlayStation VR headset. They are quite big and seem uncomfortable to use at first glimpse. However, no one purchases such a device in order to wear it as a fashion accessory. We like it because of all the technology it packs. DJI certainly managed to squeeze a lot of nice features into these goggles. The DJI Goggles offer two different viewing modes. One of them comes in 720p resolution at 60 frames per second. The other viewing mode offers a 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. Both viewing modes have a latency of 110ms. Users will be able to enjoy 1920×1080 resolution images with both eyes.
Those who will purchase or at least test the DJI Goggles will find there is a touchpad for navigating menus, a headphone jack, a microSD card slot and a microUSB port on the device. Also, they will find an HDMI input. This way, users can connect the DJI Goggles with different devices. The headset’s battery life is pretty impressive also. It ensures up to 6 hours of battery life. All this sounds good, but what do the DJI Goggles actually do?
They allow users to control both a drone and a camera gimbal only with the movements of their heads. They can do this thanks to the accelerometer and gyroscope that are a part of the device. Controlling the gimbal with head movement could prove to be easier than with a joystick. Of course, users will only be able to control the direction the drone goes in, not its speed or altitude. Even though seeing people who move their heads in a weird way may seem to be awkward to some, we are sure that those who will use the DJI Goggles will have the time of their lives.
