While the iPad Pro was the most powerful tablet that Apple had ever released when it launched in late 2015, the massive 12.9″ screen was divisive among users. While some loved how much screen real estate they had to play with, others found the device to be too large and uncomfortable to use regularly. Apple rectified this by releasing a model of the Pro version that was the more traditional 9.7″ size the following year, though it looks like they’ll try increasing its size once again.
It has been revealed that Apple’s manufacturing partners are set to begin a limited production of iPad Pro models that are 10.5″ in size, giving Pro users an increase in screen real estate over the newest Pro model without going overboard as many felt the original Pro model did. Several outlets have discussed the fact that Apple has been working on a 10.5″ iPad Pro in the past, though when it will actually release is up for debate. Some claim that it could launch as early as this Spring, while others point to a Summer, Fall or even 2018 release for the device.
One thing that many are noting is that it could feature a new edge-to-edge screen design, which would be similar to what the iPhone 8 is rumored to be shifting towards. Knowing this, it would seem to make more sense that they would announce this new iPad after they reveal the new iPhone, as the iPhone obviously has a much bigger audience. That is expected to be announced in September, meaning the new iPad Pro model would likely come shortly after that in October if it is to be announced in 2017. Regardless of all of the confusion surrounding when Apple may eventually release this new device, everyone is in agreement that its release is on the horizon.
We’ve already received a significant iPad release this year, as Apple released a new low-cost iPad last week that was the replacement for the Air 2. That device keeps the standard 9.7″ screen and comes with a $329 price tag for the 32GB model, featuring an A9 chip and a slightly thicker case compared to the Air 2. That same event also revealed the new red iPhone and iPhone 7 plus models, along with a 128GB iPhone SE and new Apple Watch bands.
