The classic RPG Planescape: Torment is getting an Enhanced Edition soon, allowing long-time fans and newcomers alike to experience an updated version on PC and mobile devices. The Enhanced Edition is being worked on by developer Beamdog, who is also responsible for the Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 and Icewind Dale Enhanced Editions.
The announcement was made through a launch trailer for the game, which you can check out at the bottom of this post. As for the enhancements that are coming to the game, the trailer reveals things like 4K Ultra HD support, an improved interface, a remastered soundtrack and updates from the original lead designer. There’s even a quote from the lead designer in the aforementioned trailer, which says “This is the best way to play Planescape: Torment, hands-down.”
The trailer for the Enhanced Edition also comes with a brief description, which reads “Get ready for Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android! Discover an incredibly rich story and a unique setting unlike anything else in fantasy. Defeat strange and alien creatures, engage in rich dialogue, and explore the dark and dangerous Planescape setting in this 50+ hour RPG classic.”
It has been a long time since Planescape: Torment originally launched, which was in 1999 for the PC. The game is notable for its very unique setting and style of gameplay, with it being a primarily story-driven experience where combat isn’t prominently featured. The protagonist is simply known as The Nameless One, who is an immortal who has lived many lives but has forgotten all about them, including his own name. His adventure has him trekking through strange lands to reclaim the memories of his previous lives.
The game was not a big commercial success when it launched, but it nevertheless was critically-acclaimed and developed a cult following that is still going strong to this day. Earlier this year saw the release of Torment: Tides of Numenera, which was a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment that was also well-received.
