Despite consoles getting more and more powerful and delivering games that are unlike anything possible from previous console generations, there’s no escaping the fact that they’re inferior to PCs. A PC equipped with the latest and greatest hardware puts consoles to shame, and now the developer of an upcoming game has made his stance on that fact blatantly known.
A Way Out developer Hazelight’s Josef Fares recently did an interview with Engadget, and he brought up the power of the PlayStation 4 and how it pales in comparison to a PC. He said “You want the honest truth? This machine is not so strong as you think. This is like a five-year-old PC. If consoles were as powerful as PCs are today, you would see all different games. Most of the work developers put out there is to make them work on consoles.”
This is a point that gets brought up more and more lately, and is partially why both Sony and Microsoft are starting to introduce more powerful versions of their consoles with the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, respectively. While both of those consoles will offer console gaming experiences that are cutting edge, they still don’t hold a candle to someone who has a high-end PC.
However, what console gamers miss out on in power they gain in simplicity. All that a console gamer has to do is buy the console and then they’re set for the next several years, barring the occasional firmware updates that are typically quick and painless. A PC gamer has to regularly upgrade their hardware and configure games to ensure they run as good as they can on their current setup, which is definitely a lot more work than what is required on consoles. Some people don’t mind doing that and have gotten to the point where it doesn’t take them much effort, but others can’t stand it and end up avoiding the PC gaming experience entirely.
