The Technomancer, a new Sci-Fi RPG is coming to PC and consoles tomorrow, June 28th, and yet it seems that a lot of people haven’t even heard of the game’s existence. Well, let’s clear the air here. The Technomancer is a follow up to Spider Studios well received Mars: War Logs, and from what we’ve seen Spider’s latest project shares more than a few similarities with it.
To paint a better picture, The Technomancer seems to be a mixing pot of elements taken from titles such as Mass Effect and Fallout. There is a companion system that utilizes a karma feature, and mutant creatures affected by radiation scour the red planet of Mars as hostile creatures. Assuming the role of one of the technomancers from a powerful corporation known as Abundance, the player will use the destructive electrical powers innate to him along with three varied combat styles.
The three combat styles are confined to the technomancer’s primary weapon the staff, his equally lethal blade-and-gun combination, and a ground and pound approach that features a mace and shield. The skill tree includes advanced combat options for all three stances in addition to a fourth one that enhances your elemental powers.
Much like Mars: War Logs, The Technomancer looks to excel at character customization, featuring an upgrade system that allows the player to modify armor pieces with parts found around the world. Unfortunately, much of the criticism handed out to Mars: War Logs surrounded its wonky combat and mediocre story. And though I cannot speak as to the quality of The Technomancer’s story just yet, the combat revealed in the gameplay trailer doesn’t look like anything to write home about.
That being said, The Technomancer isn’t an AAA title that had a huge budget to work with, and yet the game still looks like a solid RPG experience. In addition, The Technomancer is available on Steam for only $38.24. If you aren’t totally sold on it then I recommend you pick up Mars: War Logs – which is on sale for a mere $3.75 on Steam – so you know some of what to expect.
