Goodbye GoBow, Hello Illustrious Sage
Hot on the heels of the console release of Patch 3.11 (story here), Hi Rez has released patch notes for the next update to their popular MOBA, Smite. Dubbed the Mid Season Update, Patch 3.12 promises a new playable god, skins, and balance changes that will shake up the current meta game in Season 3. A detailed list of the patch notes can be found here.
The new god is Erlang Shen, the Illustrious Sage. A warrior-class god from the Chinese pantheon, his kit emphasizes one-on-one combat and attack speed. Better still, he comes with his own pet, a celestial dog that attacks when he does. Looks like Skadi and her pet Kaldr have a run for their money. Beyond the new god, 3.12 also introduces new skins for the gods/goddesses Skadi, Fenrir, Bellona, and Khepri. New achievements for Odin, Hercules, and Ah Muzen Cab will be added too. The Summer of Smite event has also been officially announced. New content will be released weekly through July and August for players who participate. On the item side of things, two new relics have been added. Effect changes have also been made to the existing roster of relics. Two new items, Ritual Dagger and Emperor’s armor, augment relic effect duration and the potency of friendly and enemy towers in game, respectively. However, it’s not the items being added that have players concerned, but what’s been removed. After receiving a buff early in Season 3 that enabled it to become a mainstay in most Hunter-class builds, Golden Bow has been removed from the game entirely. This change will affect the dominance Hunters have enjoyed in Smite’s current meta game this season. Combined with changes to the passive abilities of Odin, Aphrodite, Vulcan, and other gods, Smite’s Mid-Season Update may change the season entirely.
Developed by Hi-Rez Studios (known for Global Agenda and Tribes: Ascend), Smite pits players against each other as deities of various mythologies. Unlike other MOBA’s, action takes place from a third person perspective. This minor difference changes the whole dynamic of real time combat in-game. Since being released on PC in 2014, the game has been ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Update 3.12 is the latest in the line of software patches Hi-Rez has issued for the game. No word yet on a release date.
