After numerous rumors and speculations, SPUNJ, the Australian captain of Team Renegades, has officially announced his retirement from the competitive CS:GO scene. Chad “SPUNJ” Burchill, has had a history in the game dating back to the beginning of the game and beyond.
SPUNJ came into mainstream CS:GO playing for Vox Eminor at the MSI Beat It! 2013 final. He consistently played for the team in several Majors throughout 2014 and 2015, such as EMS One Katowice, ESL One Cologne 2014, and ESL One Katowice 2015.
His appearance in a then-famous roster, brought SPUNJ to the attention of Team Renegades, an also then famous organization which boasted a well-known League of Legends team, who signed the whole ex-Vox Eminor roster. Under their new Renegades banner, they had a promising start as the team got a 9-12th place finish at ESL One Cologne 2015, beating Titan in the group stages.
Their North American journey, however, was not quite as promising. The team moved to the Downtown Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, to train for their integration in the NACS scene. After a crushing defeat at the iBUYPOWER Cup tournament as well as two failed Major qualifications and ESL Pro League failures, SPUNJ’s performance took a serious hit.
In his Twitter post, the 26-year-old SPUNJ said that he has “…decided to hang up the mouse and retire from professional CSGO!” and thanked both his past teammates as well as all his fans and supporters. Regarding his future, he commented that he wishes to stay in the eSports industry, specifically the Oceania region.
