In a surprise twist, Riot responded to a troll comment on their latest patch regarding Graves’ iconic cigar. (They famously removed it from the game, despite fierce backlash from the player base). Despite RiotSilver formally addressing the issue over two years ago, the community erupted when news of Riot’s “official canon answer” was released by RiotCactopus in his seemingly whimsical patch note comments. Here’s the excerpt:
RiotSilver’s claim two years ago, stating that the removal was due to regional censorship and age rating concerns, didn’t sit well with the community. They argued that League of Legends has other “negative” censorship concerns, like its portrayals of sexuality, obesity, violence, and alcohol. They believed the removal of Graves’ cigar, an integral part of his character design, was unfair and inconsistent with Riot’s handling of their other champions. And, to an extent, I agree with them. Come on Riot, let the man smoke!
RiotCactopus’ troll response to a troll comment was a breath of fresh air to the still grumpy, still pouty community- reminding them that Riot is human, Riot cares, but Riot is over it. It’s exactly this type of player interaction that makes Riot so successful. They continue to humor their players after two years of their whining and moaning, embracing them like a parent embraces their snot nosed brat. The League community is infamous for their toxicity and temper tantrums, but I can’t help but love it in the same way I love Taco Bell: most of the time it gives me cancer, but the times it does things right make it all worth it. Riot is the parent company their community needs, but is infinitely better than what they deserve. Stay cool, Riot.
